Most of you who are into filmmaking and visiting vimeo from time to time might already know this short, but as i read chase jarvis blog this week, i noticed – not everyone does. So i think it really can´t be a bad idea to just post it here again. This still is the best short i´ve seen so far. No additional words needed, just watch:

“I have Photoshop” is a cool stop-motion clip imagining what we all already imagined some day. What if we had a tool like photoshop in real life. your kitchen is dirty? clean it with a few mouseclicks :)

“Photoshop dexterity (PSD) is a skillset acquired by proficient users of Adobe Photoshop, the world’s most ubiquitous digital tool for creating visual ideas. Qualities of PSD include supernatural powers of imagination and an overwhelming desire to constantly make the world more beautiful. PSD affects people from different walks of life. In fact, there is a high probability that you have PSD.”

“I have PSD” was created by people whose worlds would not be the same had they not acquired PSD. In fact, you wouldn’t be reading this or watching their short film if it weren’t for PSD.

Reminds me of my greatest wish – google flat. When will the day come when we can type in what we are looking for in our flat, and it simply shouts, blinks, or does what ever has to be done to be found … Think i have to write a mail to Google again …

There is a lot of discussion during the last years … Do we really produce too much CO2? Doesn´t nature itself produce more then we ever could? Does this affect the actual climate change? No matter if you think they are right or wrong – it´s definitely a good idea to plant more trees on our nice little planet, as we destroy way too much of them for our own needs. Planting a tree (and besides – as i think – help reducing co2 at least a little bit) is much more easy then you might think. Just put a little link on your blog, and these guys will plant a tree for you! Nice idea. And one can definitely say – even if it should´nt help at all, it still is a beautiful green thing you left on earth, without any effort … Join now! ;-)

didn´t post any new stuff for quite a long time here. that´s because i simply needed some time off. no cellphone, no computer, no photography … or at least not too much of it ;-) of course it´s impossible for someone so obsessed by photography not to take at least some pictures and videos … at least to share a liiittle bit of bali-feeling with my blog-readers. here we go, enjoy! ;-)

The Canon 5D brought a great new way of producing videos to us, thanks for that. On the other hand, this also brought a lot of need in disk space, which is not always fun. My latest project was quite big, 3 days of shooting with 2 5Ds, a lot of material, and even more after converting to Apple´s ProRes, ending up with a 1TB hard disk full of stuff. (If you don´t know what i´m talking about, you might want to see this post by vincent laforet (or one of hundreds concerning prores conversion). Here´s just a short post on how to manage your fullHD videostuff, without running out of TB-harddisks every few weeks.

The first problem we face is the ProRes Codec. Nice for editing, but the files get a few times larger than the original .h264 out of the camera. But, we still need them, as .h264 is still horrible for editing. So here´s a great way from Heinz Donaubauer to solve this. Instead of converting fullHD ProRes files for the edit, we just convert ProRes Proxy files, which are much smaller. After we finished our cut, just reconnect the files with the original .h264 files, and you got your edit in fullHD with no loss at all.

After you finished your whole project, you will find your hard disk full of stuff you will not need again, but as we don´t want to delete something… most of the time we keep it. That is why my latest project took 1TB of disk space! I really don´t want to buy another closet for my TB-drives only, and end up searching for a new office … so here is what you can do to reduce your f.e. 100GB project to a maybe 30, 40GB project, done by Peter Salvia:

Of course not every workflow fits every need, so maybe this one is not the right workflow for you. There are lots of ways out there to convert, edit, and manage data … If you know another/a better one, don´t hesitate to post it here in the comments area. We never stop learning new ways, right ;-)

Sorry this took quite a long time, but we had a lot of projects during the last weeks, and projects always means troubles and no time :-) Here are our 10 favourites out of your pictures you sent. Finally i can write this one sentence i read so often, and never really liked – it was a very hard decision as a lot of your posts look great, and deciding who´s a winner really wasn´t easy! Thank´s for sharing!

Canon was nice enough to give me the coming up Canon IXUS 300HS for some days to test this neat little cam. The first thing i really liked about it was unpacking it. I think my old Sony-Ericsson mobile was quite about the same size. (a liiittle bit smaller) The next thing i love about it – press “ON”, see the Canon-Logo for a second, and go! No annoying startup-time like many others still have. And the function that made me most curious – 240 frames per second, in QVGA (320×240 pixel). Not too big, but still enough for nice little youtube-clips. Before telling long stories about the camera, let me show you the result of my first hour with the camera. Unpacked, put aside the user manual (who reads them anyway) and went out with my dog for about an hour. Here´s what came out:

I didn´t do any color grading or editing at all, this is what came out of the camera. The only thing i did here is upscaling. The original clip is 320 x 240 pixel, i made it 480 x 360.

As you can see, the 240 fps is a wonderful function of this IXUS. You will have a lot of fun playing around with this. And with the software coming with the camera, you can quickly edit and save your stuff. No extra software needed.

As you can see the light was not too good that day. But the 2.0 lens does a great job here!
I hope i will soon find some time to do more clips, and of course some photos!

Update coming soon …

I never expected to do pictures that would be presented on a 40 x 6 meter (131 x 20 ft) superwidescreen. Last week i did. 50 pictures inside the biggest radiostation in austria (the word biggest has a new meaning now) were presented at the so called “radionight”, an event for radiofreaks and advertising people to meet, shake hands, and let each other know how wonderful they are (as we need each other). (why we? besides i got a little show at the radiostation i did these pictures for).

iPhone_overview

I just updated the set of iPhone wallpapers from my galleries. From 24 pictures, pimped to 38 now. All you have to do is download the .zip – file, extract it, and send the folder to your iPhone. (There´s also a weblink in the folder, just to make you not forget me ;-) If you like them, maybe you would like to retweet them. I wouldn´t mind ;-)

Last Autumn i finally got myself a nice little tool for my 5DmkII I wanted ever since. A little Timer-Remote-Trigger (Canon TC-80N3). Until then, i was one of those freaks thinking “for those few timelapse sequences I take, this doesn´t pay off”. You know what that means… Try to shoot at least 500 pictures, one every 10 seconds. I tried once, that was the day I went to my local dealer and payed 137,- € for this remote. Not cheap, but worth it.
